Holy Week
Semana Santa
Each year, the streets become the stage for a collective performance in which the sacred and the profane, solemnity and everyday life coexist in a distinctive universe of symbols, rituals and contradictions.
Ritual and public space
Holy Week moves away from a conventional view of the celebration to explore what happens at its margins. Beyond the liturgy and the spectacle of processions, the images reveal a parallel reality made up of unnoticed gestures, chance encounters, unusual situations and silences laden with meaning.
The series finds its distinctiveness in the tension between the planned and the unexpected, between ritual staging and the spontaneity of life. Irony, strangeness and emotion emerge from seemingly secondary scenes, revealing a human dimension often hidden behind the ceremonial.
Beyond documenting a tradition, Holy Week offers a view of the human condition, collective identity and the contradictions of a society that, even in its most solemn moments, never stops enacting its own reality.
